How much longer has the OPI, the Office of Police Integrity in Victoria, got?
Not long I would say. They're being investigated by the Commissioner's office for corruption.
This seems to me a bit like the farm dog being busted for stealing the farmer's sheep.
Victoria Police Association secretary Greg Davies said the case strengthened the argument for the OPI to be scrapped. Instead we'd have a broad-based anti-corruption commission.
Like other states do. Am I the only one sensing an air of inevitability here?
With the state government in a bit of trouble (not quite critical yet, I think), they're going to have to decide pretty soon whether they'll bluff this out during an election lead-up or bite the bullet. It's not exactly front of brain at the moment in the minds of the voters.
Barrister Peter Faris, QC, said ''In this case, I don't think the police have much choice but to investigate the OPI because they are the only department available - and that couldn't be more unsatisfactory... It highlights the question of who investigates allegations against the body that's supposed to investigate the police? As it stands, it goes around and around in a stupid big circle.''
Fair point.
What the hell would happen if there was an irregularity in the investigation of the OPI - who'd investigate it?
The OPI ?
