This is the robot from Hayao Miyazaki's animated film Tenkū no Shiro Rapyuta (known in the US as "Castle in the Sky").
It stands in a theme park called Ghibli Museum in Mitaka Tokyo, which is dedicated to Miyazaki's works. My tribe and I visited it in 2006.
Tonari no Totoro ("My Neighbour Totoro") is still my favourite Miyazaki film, mostly for the flawless and detailed evocation of rural Japan, which most casual tourists never see. The grinning cat-bus is reproduced in full size in the museum and kids can roll around inside it.

ReplyDeleteI agree completely. It is at one time very faithful to reality and very beautiful. This stood out to me when I saw it, and is also my favorite thing in all of Miyazaki's work.
Thank you for stopping by, and for letting me know that someone else saw the same thing in this film.
ReplyDeleteI like your site very much and have added it to my list.
I dig some anime but I've never really gotten into much of the Japanese stuff though.
ReplyDeleteOn a related note, here's how we roll in the States.
There's a link at the end of that last comment but you can't see it unless you roll your cursor over it.
ReplyDeleteSaw the link, thanks.
ReplyDeleteI'll say that I admire a determined hobbyist.
Thanks. I have yours on my list now too.
